Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast NBCUniversal, has announced its boldest European venture yet: the launch of a world-class Universal-branded theme park and resort in Bedford, UK. Pending planning approval, this will mark the company's first foray into the UK and European markets with its iconic brand of immersive entertainment, thrilling rides, and blockbuster attractions.
The proposed UK resort will include:
• A Universal-branded theme park with multiple themed lands.
• A 500-room hotel for domestic and international guests.
• A comprehensive retail, dining, and entertainment complex.
This landmark development promises to bring Universal’s signature Hollywood magic to UK soil, drawing inspiration from its flagship destinations in Orlando, Florida and Hollywood, California.
Though smaller in scale than Universal Orlando Resort, the Bedford site aims to deliver a similarly immersive experience and major tourism draw in the European market.
The proposed Universal theme park and resort will be located in Bedford, United Kingdom, on a nearly 500-acre site just north of the Wixams development. Strategically positioned between London and Birmingham, the location offers strong national and international connectivity via nearby rail lines and motorways, including the A421 and the Midland Main Line. The site will benefit from major infrastructure upgrades, including a newly expanded Wixams railway station, direct slip roads from the A421, and local road enhancements. This central location places the park within easy reach of millions of potential visitors across the UK and continental Europe, making it a prime destination for tourism, employment, and economic development.
According to an independent Economic Impact Assessment, the Bedford-based resort is forecasted to generate:
• £50 billion in total economic benefit for the UK over its lifecycle.
• 8,000 permanent jobs and 20,000 jobs during construction.
• £14 billion in tax revenues for HM Treasury over 25 years.
• Significant boosts to UK tourism with millions of expected international visitors.
Infrastructure upgrades are also central to the plan, including the expansion of Wixams railway station, new slip roads from the A421, and local road improvements.
Public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with over 92% of local residents supporting the development during the consultation process in 2024. The project has also secured backing from local authorities and will prioritize local employment, with around 80% of employees expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.
Universal Destinations & Experiences plans to submit a formal planning application to the UK Government in the coming months. If approved, construction could begin in 2026, setting the stage for the UK’s most ambitious entertainment project yet.

Universal’s move into the UK marks a significant milestone not only for the company but for the UK’s tourism, creative, and entertainment sectors. While smaller than its American counterparts, the Bedford resort is poised to become a cornerstone of European family tourism and a gateway to bringing global entertainment experiences closer to home.
